Little Red Corvette –

Little Red Corvette & Thalia!

Deemed as the bona fide backseat make out song of Prince’s 1983 album titled 1999, Little Red Corvette combines Prince’s sultry lyrics filled with innuendos with synth-saturated click track rhythms to make one flirty little number.

Although prior to this song, Prince was known for his blatantly sexual lyrics mixed with a raw and funkier sound, which resulted in most of his earlier recording not getting any radio play. This song was just obscure enough to not have offended anybody thus resulting in radio play.

In the song, Prince narrates a one-night stand with a beautiful but promiscuous woman, metaphorically named “Little Red Corvette,” throughout the song he claims to enjoy the experience but urges her to slow down, find a love that is going to last before she destroys herself. The exact nature of the song is left to the imagination being that Prince is never quite clear as to whether he is talking about a car or some red hot minx. In addition to “Little Red Corvette,” Prince uses several other automobile metaphors, including comparing their interlude to riding in a limousine.

It is rumored Prince got the idea for the song while he fell asleep in Lisa Coleman’s Edsel or Mercury Montclair, depending on who you talk to, after an exhausting all-night recording session. Lisa Colman was Prince’s keyboardist for both his 1999 album and Controversy albums and did backing vocals for Little Red Corvette. According to the rumor, the lyrics came to Prince in bits and pieces during that particular catnap and others that followed and eventually he was able to finish it without sleeping.

Prince 7 inch Little Red CorvetteLittle Red Corvette became one of Prince’s best known songs and helped put his name on the music charts. This song was his biggest hit at the time, and the first to reach top ten status in the United States peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which is the US music industry standard singles popularity chart issued by Billboard magazine. Little Red Corvette was one of his first singles to perform better on the pop chart then the R&B chart, due to the pop/rock format of the song.

The same Little Red Corvette inspired another musician, Stevie Nicks who got the idea for “Stand Back” after hearing Little Red Corvette. She heard Prince’s song in her car, wrote “Stand Back” that night, later called Prince who came into the studio when they recorded the song to play keyboards.

Little Red Corvette is one of those songs that will forever stand the test of time. In 2001, Chevrolet put up billboards with a picture of a red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray that stated, “They don’t write songs about Volvos.” In 2003, Chevrolet used that statement in a commercial that aired for the first time during the Grammys. The ad showed old footage of The Beach Boys performing “My 409″ followed by Don McLean singing “American Pie” (“drove my Chevy to the levee”), and then Prince performing “Little Red Corvette.”

Little Red Corvette – Prince
Taken from the massively successful album 1999, Little Red Corvette has plenty of innuendo in full-on Prince fashion. At the time it was Prince’s most successful release, hitting number 6 in the Billboard Charts in 1982

Why Corvettes and

Rock Music Are a Perfect

Match

Admit it, whenever a Corvette goes by, time has a funny way of standing still, does’nt it? America’s sports car has been thrilling us since 1953. From it’s humble beginnings with a straight six cylinder engine, to the jaw dropping big blocks of the 60’s and the 70’s. 2-speed powerglides to the ZF 6-speed, the Corvette has had every type of transmission imagined in an automobile. Whatever the drivetrain or powerplant though, any Corvette will flat out haul the mail. Uphill, downhill, straight or twisty, the Corvette performs in any condition. If you have ever tried to keep up with one, or been lucky enough to actually drive one, you know what I’m talking about.

Where exactly does the music fit into this? Several ways, which I’d like to explain. First, the type of music that is commonly heard from a Corvette does’nt even come from the speakers. It actually comes from the rear of the car. You guessed it, I’m talking about the exhaust. Weather the engine is the tried and true 5.7 litre 350 small block, or the big block 427’s, that is music to my ears. The rumble of chambered exhaust, or a good old fashioned sidepipe set up, is almost as good as any classic rock hit. The c.d. player in my personal Corvette is rarely used, I just can’t get over the sound that the car makes. A low throaty rumble at idle to a howl at full throttle, it just does’nt get any better than that.

Little Red CorvetteNext, how many songs were made about the Corvette, or in reference to a Corvette? The Beach Boys start things off with a reference to a fuel injected Sting Ray in thier classic music hit, Shut Down. Jan and Dean had the mega-rock hit, Dead Man’s Curve. The Jag and the Vette all the way to the end. I never really understood who won that race. According to the lyrics, the Corvette was in the lead to the final chorus. I’d like to thimk the Vette took it. Marty Friedman even got into the groove with his music instrumental hit, Fuel Injected Stingray.

Moving into the era I’m most comfortable with, the 80’s music scene. Prince ripped out his 80’s classic music hit, Little Red Corvette. A fitting song in reference to the Corvette is Bad Company and thier 80’s hit Rock of America. What other car could be referenced with a title like that?!? David Lee Roth released his hit, Sensible Shoes. He’s got it all, the Corvette, a good job, now all he needs are the sensible shoes to complete the package!!

Even 80’s country stars got swept up with Americas Sports Car. Remember George Jones and his huge hit, The Corvette Song? She was hotter than a two dollar pistol!! Hopefully, everyone will remember the great tribute to a fallen soldier. Riding With Private Malone by David Ball is always a classic favorite. What she called a Chevy was a 66 Corvette. Bless you Pvt. Malone and all our Fallen Heroes.

Whatever you call it, Americas Sports Car or Americas Super Car, the Corvette has and will always go hand in hand with classic music hits. Even the creator of the Corvette, Zora Duntov, could’nt have imagined anything better. Don’t get me wrong here, I love all the classic cars from America. The Corvette just happens to be my favorite. What else can you say? The Corvette and classic music hits. A match made in Heaven.

The Very Best of Prince

The Very Best of Prince

$5.92

Taken literally, this album’s title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early anthem “Controversy,” no “Erotic City”–no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single versions–and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. Damn. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Prince is (ahem) a qui…

Prince’s fifth album came right before the lascivious multi-instrumentalist became a huge star with his 1984 film and soundtrack, Purple Rain. But Prince had already proved himself to be the most audacious talent to emerge in the 1980s, and 1999, the bulk of which features Prince on all the instruments, reflects the dance-rock styles that he also brought to the acts he produced, particularly …
