How to Become an Antique Picker
I know I was when I was laid off from my job. The job market stinks right now and I had to do something fast. Then I was watching television the other night and saw a show about antique pickers. It’s called American Pickers and I really love that show.
I got to thinking, if they can do it why can’t I. So I did some research on the business and started immediately. There are a few things that we need to know when we start out on our new adventure, so lets get pickin.
The first and most important thing that you need to learn is value. If you want to learn how to become an antique picker this is very important. If you do not know what something is worth when you buy it, how the heck can you know if you are getting a good deal or not.
A good place to start is at your local antique shops. Pick a few places close to where you live and browse. You will get a good idea what things sell for and what is hot.
Get to know the shop owner, you can pick his or her brain for whats selling right now. After you leave jot down some notes on what you saw, prices and such… we are just getting a feel for things right now.
After you get an idea on whats hot, drive around your local area and keep on the look out for old houses or barns that might have items you are on the hunt for. This is just one way to find antiques.
Antiquing or junking as it is also known can be hard work but is also lots of fun. Other places to find items to buy are at household auctions,storage auctions, garage sales and the internet.
Try to specialize in certain items and really learn about them, you will become an expert in no time.
After you buy a few items go back to your local antique shops and see if they might be interested in your new finds. If they are not, you can sell them on eBay or other online auctions.
There are many other pieces of the puzzle for antique pickers to learn, this is just the start. Read all you can about antiques and collecting and you will have a good start.

The American Pickers – TV Show
This show is pretty cool as well, and I also learn a lot every time I watch an episode. It’s about two guys who are “pickers”. This is to say that they drive around the country looking for old items to buy from people, and they turn around and re-sell them. For the most part, they will look around through peoples old stuff that may have been laying around for years, and if they see something they like, they make an offer. Sometimes the owners have no interest in selling, and sometimes they do. The really interesting thing is what certain items can be worth. For me, I wouldn’t offer more than about $5 for most of the items on the show, but some of these antique items can fetch a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and most people consider it garbage.
No matter what the pickers find though, you usually get some kind of history lesson about the item, and that is what makes it interesting to watch. Also, I like to see what a piece of “junk” or “antique” can be worth, because it’s mind-boggling sometimes.
